Chiropractic neurology is a cutting edge science which combines the orthopedic aspects of chiropractic with neurological evaluation in order to formulate a treatment plan to rehabilitate the brain and bring balance to the body naturally.
What is a brain-based model of Chiropractic?
The brain and nervous system control everything you think, feel and do, thereby controlling the health of your entire body. They are the master control centers of the body which direct and regulate the activities of the immune, digestive, cardiovascular, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems; therefore, many if not all health conditions have a brain-based component of varying degrees. This means that regardless of whatever disease or symptoms a person is suffering from – whether it is pain, digestive disturbances, allergies, hormonal disruptions, etc. – dysfunction of the brain and nervous system are often contributing factors.
The job of the Chiropractic Neurologist is to determine, via a standardized functional neurological examination, if and how the brain and nervous system may be contributing to a person’s symptoms.
Can the brain really be rehabilitated?
The premise we base our diagnoses and treatment on is called Functional Neurology. By isolating functionally which areas of a patient’s nervous system are involved with the problems they are having, we can select the best treatment to balance the brain and reduce the problem, not just the symptoms. The focus is on the overall function of the nervous system as the ultimate goal of our treatment.
After determining which areas of the brain and nervous system are not performing properly, the Chiropractic Neurologist restores the brain back to optimal functioning through the use of natural therapies such as adjustments of the spine and extremities, brain exercises and the use of light, heat, water, sound and electric stimulation. Once appropriate brain activity is restored many symptoms disappear. This is possible via neuronal plasticity which means that the brain is constantly able to grow new connections and regenerate the cells that comprise its structure and function. Now that’s good news indeed!
All of this activity allows the brain to be rehabilitated just like a muscle which can be exercised and strengthened. The key is in determining which areas of the brain are weak through examination and then prescribing the appropriate therapies using different forms of sensory and cognitive stimulation to restore function. It might best be described as brain-based physical rehabilitation.
What makes our approach different?
Optimal health is achieved when the body is freed from interference; therefore, an integrated approach must be taken to insure that the muscles, joints and connective tissue communicate freely with the brain and nervous system. At Georgia Chiropractic Neurology Center we utilize techniques and therapies that address all of these elements that are vital for your health and well being.
