It has been the common belief that the Earth’s atmosphere is made of oxygen alone. However, this is not the case. The air that we breathe every day is comprised approximately of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and 1% of other trace gases. This means that we are mainly breathing in nitrogen, more so than oxygen.
As humans, oxygen is essential for cellular energy production in each cell’s mitochondria. If we are only consuming 21% of oxygen from the Earth’s atmosphere, what would happen if we were to consume more than 21% of oxygen?
Studies have shown that there are several benefits to increasing the amount of oxygen that is consumed. This type of therapy is known as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
During HBOT, the patient will enter a hyperbaric chamber where the air coming into the chamber is pressurized. The pure oxygen is pressurized to a range of 1.3 to 3 times of Earth’s standard atmospheric pressure.
Healing Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
Studies have shown that when consuming oxygen at increased pressures, it can increase the amount of oxygen being absorbed into the bloodstream. This can allow for the absorbed oxygen to be dissolved at a faster rate, as compared to normal atmospheric pressure.

Increasing the flow of oxygen to the body’s tissues can promote healing in muscles and organs. Elevating the oxygen levels can also decrease inflammation in the body.

Is this type of treatment helpful for someone with Fibromyalgia and degenerative disc disease? I see that a session is $65, does that include the evaluation and office visit or is that another charge. Does 1 treatment make a difference or would I be looking at multiple treatments? Does BCBS cover any of it via the out of network coverage?
